Healing – The Various Arts Of Restoration

Whether you are seeking healing in your own life or are interested in learning to help others facilitate their healing, the subject matter is vastly divergent. Healing can occur on any/every level, including:

  • Physical (probably the most commonly known level)
  • Mental
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Financial

There’s that old saying, “If you lose your health, you lose everything.” It’s ancient, but also true. Anytime your health falters or suffers in one or more of the areas listed just above, everything else in your life is impacted negatively as well. So learning as much about the art of healing as you can, for yourself, your family and friends, as well as clients if you choose to follow the path of a healing practitioner, is absolutely crucial.

Healing can occur through a variety of methods as well, such a physical therapy, rest and recuperation following surgery or injury; the power of prayer; overcoming an addiction; releasing fears or phobias; traditional allopathic medicine (including surgery, medication, etc.); naturopathic/holistic healing often involves various natural treatments such as taking herbs and vitamins along with other nonsurgical treatment therapies; acupuncture; nutrition correction and balance; massage therapy; colon cleansing…the list goes on. Then there is energy medicine healing, which may involve laying on of hands, Reiki, chakra and aura cleansing, healing with crystals, faith healing, hypnotherapy, medical intuitive treatment therapies and so forth. One thing that is consistent throughout whatever form of healing you seek or learn about – something Jesus said long ago in the Bible and many other healers in history have known or written is this: “It is done unto you as you believe.” That powerful statement is worth some closer examination prior to going into more detail about the various modalities of healing which exist. “As you believe” encompasses that life (i.e., the Universe) not only responds to your belief system (level of faith and your own deservingness), but also to the manner in which you believe.

This is also the basis upon which the principles of many Universal Laws are based. For example, the Law of Attraction, in its purest distilled down form, basically amounts to another age-old tenet – you’ll reap what you sow; whatever you focus your attention, energy and thought (including belief system) upon, that is what you continue to experience more and more of in your waking daily physical life. If you continually focus upon the lack of things in your life (health, money, romance, career success, etc.) then you will surely stay stuck and simply manifest more and more lack. But if you successfully shift your attitude and focus upon what is right in your life – circumstances, significant people, basic needs being more than met – then you create a virtual magnetism which will bring more and better manifestations of good into your life. This applies to what level of healing you are seeking/employing as well. So the belief system of any individual when it comes to their healing is quite possibly the most crucial component in how well/to what degree their healing will occur. Some would call this “mind over matter,” and that’s not really wrong; human beings are a combination of body/mind/spirit, and it takes mutual cooperation of all three levels in order to successfully achieve goals, including healing. This has been demonstrated time and time again in many medical research studies, where a control group of subjects were administered an actual medication or therapy, and another group received a placebo (sugar pill or other non-medical treatment that varied from the control group’s). If the group receiving the placebo truly believes they are going to get better, they often do!

So you can see that healing definitely occurs in a wide spectrum not just of methodology or practice, but also according to how the subject/patient believes that healing will affect them. Therefore it is highly recommended that you do a thorough self-examination of your belief system prior to embarking upon a healing path for yourself or to work as a healer who facilitates healing in others. Without this key component being understood and in some cases, adjusted and strengthened, healing cannot fully take place. That’s an excellent foundation upon which to build any personal healing or healing practice. Now let’s consider some of the many forms of healing which exist.

Allopathic/Western Medicine

While many people (this writer included) prefer to deal with a more naturopathic, holistic approach to medicine and healing, if I break a bone, I am not going to try and fix it by taking a course of herbs – that would be utter nonsense, not to mention ineffective! I would see a surgeon who could repair and set my bone so that it healed properly. So doctors, nurses and their entire profession deserve lots of kudos and appreciation for the amazing work they offer every day – from those working in the E.R., medics on the battlefield, those in private practice, as well as others helping the underprivileged in programs such as Doctors Without Borders. You deserve great respect and the rest of us are very grateful that you went into your chosen profession – thank you!

If your belief system and health coverage encompasses the treatment that allopathic providers have to offer, that’s great. However, if you are open to alternative and/or integrative healing procedures, please continue reading about some of the many additional options.

Herbal Remedies and Nutrition & Exercise Improvement

There are many skilled practitioners in the fields of herbs, vitamins and natural supplement-based healing. If you yourself is interested in learning more about these fields, whether to become more informed, or possibly to learn how to join the numbers of those who offer these skills, just doing a Google search will bring up a plethora of insight as well as fields & courses of study.

Chinese medicine uses effective herbs for many maladies, and can be extremely effective in the healing process. If you’re seeking someone well versed in this field, make sure they have the proper training and credentials. Many are also certified/trained in acupuncture. Acupuncture is amazing – research it!

Nutrition and exercise are also critical components of maintaining excellent overall health, so working with people who specialize in these fields can go a long way toward correcting and/or maintaining good health. Again, if you’re more interested in studying either or both of these important fields, you’ll find a wide range of courses and institutions which can help you become credentialed in whatever subject(s) to which you are most drawn.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy has been proven to be extremely effective in healing on all levels throughout the centuries. Dealing with one’s subconscious mind, learning to replace negative paradigms with powerful, positive desired ones is what this practice is all about. A skilled hypnotherapist can help you learn to recognize the triggers which motivate you to indulge in negative, self-defeating behaviors/habits and then to replace those with positive imagery followed up with action to make the necessary course corrections in your life so that your healing is complete on every level – physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and yes, even financially.

Hypnotherapy has been used in countless instances to help people deal with more issues than can possibly be listed here. Just a few of them include:

  • Faster recovery from surgery or an accident
  • Releasing fears associated with disease
  • Overcoming fears and phobias of every ilk
  • Improving self-esteem, confidence, academic and sales performance and more

Hypnotherapy is an excellent alternative or compliment to many other healing modalities, and the great news about it is, there are no negative side effects such as the litany of those you hear on commercials for just about any prescription drug that exists today.

So hypnotherapy (notice the use of the word hypnoTHERAPY – not just “hypnosis” – this is therapeutic use of hypnosis, and has nothing to do with stage hypnosis, which is performed strictly for entertainment value rather than healing) has many benefits. Again, whether you’re looking into it for your own healing, or would like to become a C.Ht (Certified Hypnotherapist) yourself, putting in some due diligence and research time online will yield an amazing amount of results. Past life regression therapy is another branch of this fascinating field; sometimes during a regression, clients are guided to pinpoint a previous existence and experiences which they may have inadvertently carried over into their present lifetime experience – a talented hypnotherapist can help them explore that in a safe manner and release any old blockages so that the present lifetime can be most fully experienced.

NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is a specialized branch of brainwave work combined with positive thinking, and is considered an offshoot of hypnotherapy by many. Tony Robbins is among a large number of successful professionals who employ NLP and have used it to manifest success and healing in their lives.

Energy Work

This is such a broad field, it’s impossible to list every form of energy work/healing that’s out there, so bear in mind that these are but a few of the many options. When one uses energy healing, they are dealing with not only the physical body, but the client’s thoughts, aura/energy field, and various external and internal influences which may have led to the manifestation of the particular illness, misalignment, etc., that the client is experiencing.

Reiki is perhaps one of the best known methods of energy healing. Others include REM (Rapid Eye Movement) therapy, “tapping,” using special healing crystals (which may be used above or below the body, or laid right on its surface), faith healing could be considered a form of energy work…. there are countless others. Whether you’re seeking healing via energy work or desire to become a practitioner of it, it’s highly suggested that you seek out a method/methods which resonate with you personally and that you are comfortable with. Put in some research, take a class or two or more if you’re so inclined, and you are bound to find a number of energy healing modalities which you find appealing.

Massage

Receiving regular massage is an amazing way to maintain the proper circulation, flexibility and overall healthy maintenance of one’s body. It’s not simply a luxury; because while massage can be extremely relaxing and just downright “feel great,” it has many therapeutic properties. Encompassing many types of healing, just a few categories of massage include:

  • Swedish massage (most often used for general relaxation and circulation, to relieve stiffness, improve flexibility, etc.)
  • Hot stone massage (where smooth stones are heated and rubbed or laid on the body during the course of the massage)
  • Pregnancy massage (tailored to help expectant mothers with their specific aches and pains in safe ways – almost always done with the mother lying on her side)
  • Geriatric massage – designed to work with the senior population in safe, healing ways
  • Medical massage – therapists certified in medical massage must go through a bit more rigorous training in order to be able to most effectively and safely deal with particular diseases/ailments
  • Cranio-sacral massage – a very subtle manipulation of the cervical vertebrae, entire neck and skull to promote healing throughout the body
  • Reflexology – massage done on the feet (and hands, at times) with emphasis on working pressure points there which correspond to various organic and systemic bodily functions/areas
  • Rolfing – an intensive, deep form of massage-based healing that requires rigorous course work and practicum to gain certification

There are many others, but these are some of the better known massage regimens.

All massage therapists are required to go through coursework which covers anatomy and physiology in addition to many overall health classes, and to put in a set number of hours doing practicum – employing their learned techniques – on many clients prior to being granted a massage license. Therefore if you are seeking a very reasonably priced massage, you may wish to set up an appointment with a student at a local college or institution which has students enrolled who are looking to gain experience and meet those hourly requirements.

Whatever form of healing you’re seeking for your personal use or want to learn how to apply it, best wishes to you!
